Oh hi therrrre, I hope your day is going just swimmingly! I’m just popping in for a mini update, first up is another wee studio update. I actually got to start doing some painting this week (it’s been quite the process getting my new space sorta functional), and you can see a painting I was playing with.
I’m not sure if it’s done, for me just getting used to the new space (and easel), and getting a brush back in my hand was more important than the finished result.
I’m also going to be starting shortly on some mini painting tests, I’ll do the same painting (likely of one of my blue and white vases) on a series of different linen and canvas samples. Some are primed with oil ground, which is a protective coating that prevents the oils in the paint from seeping into the fabric (and eventually discolouring and rotting it). Two of them are acrylic (“universal”) primed, which is what most of my panels and canvases are, but I’ve been wanting to play with oil grounds for a while so I’ll see which texture and priming combo I like best. 😊
I also wanted to pop in to let you know that Spoonflower is having a 20% off fabric sale right now (until 11:59pm PT March 28). 😊
Also, they’ve just introduced metallic wallpapers — silver and gold wallpapers that they’ll print our designs on. I haven’t done any testing on this paper yet for my designs, I don’t know if the underlying tone of the paper will change the colours of the art dramatically or not. The mockup images on the site seem to indicate that’s a possibility, but mockups are always hard as they don’t show the shine of the paper, it’s hard to see the true tone on a screen, etc. What I may do sometime in the next while is order some samples of the metallic paper in a few of my designs, just to see what they print like (I’m not super keen to recommend them until I can see how my art prints on them, I’m never going to recommend something I’m not sure of). Spoonflower’s samples of specific designs on their site look amazing, but that art also isn’t using the same colours and illustration style as my art so it’s hard to know how it’ll print across the board. If there are any specific designs of mine in particular you’d like to see me test, please comment on this post below (and if you want to test just one of the metallic papers, let me know that too). It’d be super helpful to get your feedback on which designs might tempt you to be printed on metallic paper, as not all of my designs would be suitable for that obviously. 😊❤️
